Using the Virtual Labs and LIMS Simulations
Virtual Labs let you rehearse real laboratory workflows — from sample reception to result authorisation — in a safe, scored environment. They are designed around NHS competencies and map directly to IBMS portfolio evidence.
What is included
- Haematology LIMS — Full Blood Count validation with a 9-step checklist (QC, sample quality, flags, delta checks, clinical review, critical values, blood film triggers, reflex testing, authorisation). Units are UK g/L.
- Biochemistry Virtual Lab — analyser workflow, method validation, and result interpretation with UK reference ranges
- Microbiology — organism identification, sensitivity testing, and reporting
- Blood Transfusion — group and screen, crossmatch, antibody panel, cold chain, SHOT reporting, and major haemorrhage simulation
- Histology — specimen processing through to reporting
- Coagulation, Immunology, Virology, Genomics, Andrology — specialty-specific workflows
- NHS Genomics Laboratory Enhancement Suite — 16 modules covering sequencing, variant interpretation, and MDT simulation, aligned with Genomics England standards and ISO 15189:2022
Starting a simulation
Open Virtual Laboratory or LIMS Training from the main menu. Pick a module, select the patient case or worklist, and work through each station. Your actions are scored against the expected decision path.
Scoring and evidence
Completed simulations produce an IBMS-friendly summary showing:
- Steps completed, skipped, and failed
- Time spent per station
- Any critical-value escalations raised
- A printable certificate you can attach to your portfolio
Access
Most Virtual Lab modules are a Premium feature. NHS trusts and universities on an organisation plan have access for all their members. If you see a padlock on a module, it means your current tier does not include it — see our article on Premium vs Free or contact [email protected].
