Building Your IBMS and HCPC Portfolio

The IBMS Registration Training Portfolio and the Specialist Portfolio are structured evidence records showing you have met each required competency. The IBMS portfolio assistant (a Premium feature at /portfolio, or My training → IBMS portfolio) helps you plan the work, draft evidence and reflections, and track your progress. Formal sign-off stays with your training officer and your laboratory's own system (for example OneFile); nothing here replaces that.

What is on the page

The page has five tabs:

• Learning Path: the competency areas you are working through, grouped by discipline (Haematology and Transfusion Science, Clinical Chemistry, Medical Microbiology, Cellular Pathology, Immunology, Genetics and Genomics).
• Evidence Library: the evidence entries you have written, each linked to a competency.
• AI Assistant: a guided helper that drafts and checks reflections and evidence statements against the IBMS standards. Choose the portfolio type you are working on (Registration, Certificate of Competence by Equivalence, Specialist Diploma, or Higher Specialist Diploma) inside this tab.
• Progress: how much of each competency area you have covered.
• How v5.0 works: a summary of the current IBMS Registration Training Portfolio structure.

Adding evidence

Evidence is written text. For each competency you can:

• Write a reflection using the Gibbs reflective cycle prompts built into the AI Assistant
• Describe a piece of work you did, what you learned, and what you would do differently
• Note Virtual Lab simulations and practice results you want to cite; the assistant does not attach them for you

You cannot upload files (PDF, DOCX or images), and there is no witness or supervisor sign-off inside the platform. Keep signed paper or OneFile records where your laboratory expects them.

Exporting

From the Progress tab you can download your analytics as a JSON file, and the AI Assistant can save its answers as a text file. There is no single PDF or zipped portfolio export; paste the text you have drafted into your official portfolio.

HCPC alignment

The competency areas follow the current HCPC Standards of Proficiency for Biomedical Scientists, so evidence you draft for IBMS Registration also supports your HCPC CPD record. Your simulator and training activity is logged automatically in the CPD log, which exports an HCPC-style CPD record.

Tips

• Add evidence as you go rather than at the end.
• Keep reflections short but specific: what you did, what you learned, what you will do differently.
• Use the assistant's checks before you submit anything to your training officer.
