IBMS pathway

The four-stage IBMS progression most NHS biomedical scientists follow — each stage builds on the evidence of the last.

    Registration Portfolio

    Typically 9–12 months

    Pre-registration evidence across the 10 modules of the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio v5.0: 30 pieces of evidence, three per module. Required for HCPC application.

    Outcome: Trainee BMS → registered Band 5 BMS

  2. II

    Specialist Portfolio

    ~18 months

    Discipline-specific advanced practice evidence. Required for many Band 6 posts.

The UK statutory regulator for biomedical scientists. Sets the Standards of Proficiency and audits CPD records every two years.
IBMS— Institute of Biomedical Science
The professional body for biomedical scientists in the UK. Operates the Registration, Specialist, and Higher Specialist Portfolios.
LIMS— Laboratory Information Management System
The software platform that handles specimen tracking, result authorisation, audit trails and QC in clinical laboratories.
OSPE— Objective Structured Practical Examination
Practical assessment used by IBMS verifiers to test laboratory and clinical reasoning competence under timed conditions.
SOC 2113— Standard Occupational Classification
The ONS unit-group code for "Biochemists and biomedical scientists" in the current SOC 2020 classification (used in workforce statistics and pay structures). SOC 2020 disaggregated the previous SOC 2010 group 2112 — biomedical scientists are now in 2113, separated from biological scientists (2112).
UKAS— United Kingdom Accreditation Service
