UK Phlebotomy Training

Premium module. Open it at /phlebotomy-training, from the Support staff hub, or from your learner home. It is aimed at phlebotomists and healthcare assistants at Bands 2 to 4, students, and anyone preparing for supervised venepuncture practice in the UK.

What it covers

Fifteen units take you from the role and the law, through anatomy, infection prevention and sharps safety, equipment and tubes, the 34-step venepuncture procedure, patient identification and labelling, what the laboratory sees, blood cultures, complications, communication with patients who need adjustments, capillary sampling and the newborn blood spot, and documentation, to a final assessment and a careers unit.

Each unit has a short lesson with the source for every figure and rule, and a knowledge check with a pass mark of 80%. Units show which of the 30 knowledge points of SFHCHS132 "Obtain venous blood samples" they teach; by the end, every one is covered.

Simulations

Twelve simulations let you rehearse decisions safely, including a full virtual venepuncture for three patients, site selection, needle angle, order of draw, identification and labelling, a laboratory view of collection errors, blood cultures, a needlestick response, complications, communication, and the newborn blood spot card. Some open in 3D on devices that support it; every decision can also be made in the 2D view, which is the default on phones.

A simulation run passes when there are no critical errors and at least 80% of decisions are right first time. A critical error is one that would harm a patient or a member of staff in practice.

Finishing the module

Unit 13 brings it together: a guided mental rehearsal of the whole procedure, a 60-question final assessment drawn from Units 1 to 12 (a new set each attempt), and a clean virtual venepuncture for each of its three patients. When all of those and Units 1 to 12 are passed, the completion statement appears. You can write a reflection, which is saved to your account, and print a record of learning for your supervisor.

What it does not do

The module teaches the knowledge and lets you rehearse the procedure. It does not sign you off as competent, it is not a regulated qualification, and it does not permit unsupervised practice. In the UK, competence in venepuncture is assessed by your employer after supervised practice on patients. Unit 0 includes a printable supervised-practice log built on the standard's 17 performance criteria for that stage.

How your progress is recorded

Every knowledge check and simulation run is recorded in your training record and CPD log with the score you earned. Your confidence ratings (before and after each lesson unit) and your reflection are saved to your account. Organisation administrators see this module in their cohort analytics in the same way as other training modules.
