IBMS Specialist Portfolio

The IBMS Specialist Portfolio is the standard route many NHS Trusts use to evidence Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist competency. It is separate from the Registration Training Portfolio (which is for HCPC registration as a Band 5 BMS).

Who needs this

Specialties covered

The IBMS publishes a Specialist Portfolio for each of these:

Each has its own technical-competency framework. Inside the platform, the IBMS Portfolio Assistant at /portfolio groups them under six discipline cards (Haematology & Transfusion Science, Clinical Chemistry, Medical Microbiology, Cellular Pathology, Immunology, Genetics & Genomics) — choose the card that matches your route, then work through the Learning Path / Evidence / Assistant / Analytics tabs.

If your specialty is Andrology, Coagulation, or Virology, use the closest discipline card (Andrology and Coagulation work well under Haematology & Transfusion Science; Virology pairs with Medical Microbiology) and tag your evidence to your actual specialty in the Evidence tab.

Structure

Each Specialist Portfolio has roughly:

  1. Generic professional practice — leadership, training others, CPD
  2. Quality and governance — audit, EQA investigation, root-cause analysis
  3. Technical specialty knowledge — specialty-specific deep theory
  4. Practical specialty competence — supervised then independent practice
  5. Case studies — typically 4-6 detailed cases per portfolio
  6. Reflective practice — significant events, learning logs

How to use the tracker

  1. Open /portfolio and select Specialist Portfolio.
  2. Pick your specialty.
  3. The tracker presents the IBMS-published evidence requirements for that specialty.
  4. Complete each card with reflection, evidence attachment, and witness sign-off.
  5. Use the Result Interpretation training (see article 17) to drive case-study evidence.

Timeline

Most candidates complete the Specialist Portfolio in 18-36 months alongside Band 5 work. The case studies are usually the rate-limiting step — start collecting them as early as possible.

Without a portfolio: alternative Band 6 routes

Some Trusts accept progression to Band 6 with:

Speak to your line manager early — your Trust's preferred route shapes which evidence to collect.

If a tracker card maps to multiple of these, attach the strongest evidence rather than duplicating.
