IBMS Specialist Portfolio
The IBMS Specialist Portfolio is the standard route many NHS Trusts use to evidence Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist competency. It is separate from the Registration Training Portfolio (which is for HCPC registration as a Band 5 BMS).
Who needs this
- You are an HCPC-registered BMS working at Band 5
- You want to progress to Band 6 Specialist BMS in your specialty
- Your Trust uses the IBMS Specialist Portfolio as the evidence route (most do; some accept the IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma or an MSc instead)
Specialties covered
The IBMS publishes a Specialist Portfolio for each of these:
- Haematology
- Clinical Biochemistry
- Medical Microbiology
- Cellular Pathology (Histology)
- Blood Transfusion
- Coagulation
- Immunology
- Virology
- Molecular Pathology / Genomics
- Andrology
Each has its own technical-competency framework. Inside the platform, the IBMS Portfolio Assistant at /portfolio groups them under six discipline cards (Haematology & Transfusion Science, Clinical Chemistry, Medical Microbiology, Cellular Pathology, Immunology, Genetics & Genomics) — choose the card that matches your route, then work through the Learning Path / Evidence / Assistant / Analytics tabs.
If your specialty is Andrology, Coagulation, or Virology, use the closest discipline card (Andrology and Coagulation work well under Haematology & Transfusion Science; Virology pairs with Medical Microbiology) and tag your evidence to your actual specialty in the Evidence tab.
Structure
Each Specialist Portfolio has roughly:
- Generic professional practice — leadership, training others, CPD
- Quality and governance — audit, EQA investigation, root-cause analysis
- Technical specialty knowledge — specialty-specific deep theory
- Practical specialty competence — supervised then independent practice
- Case studies — typically 4-6 detailed cases per portfolio
- Reflective practice — significant events, learning logs
How to use the tracker
- Open
/portfolio and select Specialist Portfolio.
- Pick your specialty.
- The tracker presents the IBMS-published evidence requirements for that specialty.
- Complete each card with reflection, evidence attachment, and witness sign-off.
- Use the Result Interpretation training (see article 17) to drive case-study evidence.
Fees and process
- IBMS Specialist Portfolio fee: see
ibms.org/qualifications/specialist-portfolio for the current rate (typically a registration fee plus a verification fee)
- Verification: by an IBMS-approved Specialist Examiner via remote or onsite visit
- On success, you receive a Specialist Diploma and are eligible to register as a Chartered Scientist (CSci) via IBMS
Timeline
Most candidates complete the Specialist Portfolio in 18-36 months alongside Band 5 work. The case studies are usually the rate-limiting step — start collecting them as early as possible.
Without a portfolio: alternative Band 6 routes
Some Trusts accept progression to Band 6 with:
- Higher Specialist Diploma (HSD) instead of Specialist Portfolio
- MSc in a relevant specialty (often with significant experience)
- Demonstrated competency through internal sign-off (less common)
Speak to your line manager early — your Trust's preferred route shapes which evidence to collect.
Linking to other PathologyLabTraining content
- Use the Specialty interview pages (e.g.
/haematology-interviews) to practise specialist-level questions
- Use the Virtual Labs for hands-on simulation evidence
- Use the Result Interpretation modules for case-study material
- Use the AI Interview Coach to rehearse for the Band 6 promotion interview
If a tracker card maps to multiple of these, attach the strongest evidence rather than duplicating.
