Equipment Lab

Different from the Equipment & Cold Storage Simulator (article 59) — that covers fridges/freezers. Equipment Lab is for bench analyser operation — the day-to-day life of a Band 5 BMS at the bench.

What it does

• Presents analyser troubleshooting and maintenance scenarios drawn from major analyser classes (generic vendor patterns, not a specific brand)
• Each scenario gives you the symptoms, flags and error context
• Tests troubleshooting decisions — repeat, re-run, recalibrate, escalate, call vendor
• Records your attempts in your training progress

It does not simulate a full shift from start-up to shutdown; each scenario is a single problem to solve.

Maintenance knowledge covered

• Daily maintenance — start-of-shift checks, fluid levels, waste container, daily cleaning
• QC run — accept or reject the day's QC; trigger Westgard rule investigation if needed (see article 38)
• Calibration — daily, weekly, monthly schedules per the manufacturer
• Reagent loading and lot management — lot changeover verification
• Sample priority handling — urgent vs routine, on-board sample tracking
• Result release — autoverification rules, manual review triggers
• End-of-shift — handover, instrument shutdown / standby, deep clean cycle
• Vendor calls — when to call, what to have ready (logs, error codes, screenshots)

Troubleshooting examples

• Sample probe blockage — clear-and-prime cycle vs vendor service call
• Calibration drift across the day — analyser thermal issue, reagent age, environment
• Carryover suspected — perform carryover test, decide whether to release affected results
• Repeated flagged samples — instrument, sample, or patient-population issue
• Inter-shift handover failures — what didn't get done overnight that you now have to clean up

The simulator includes patterns for:

• Haematology analysers — cell-counting, differential, reticulocyte
• Biochemistry analysers — main chemistry, immunoassay modules
• Coagulation analysers — clot detection, factor assays
• Microbiology — automated blood-culture instruments, ID/sensitivity panels
• Molecular — PCR cyclers, NGS sequencer support
• Cellular pathology processors — tissue processors, embedders, microtomes

Standards alignment

• Manufacturer IFU — always the primary reference
• ISO 15189:2022 clauses 6.6 (Equipment) and 7.2 (Examination methods)
• MHRA for device-related incidents and recalls
• UK NEQAS schemes — your performance on QC and EQA validates the analyser's day-to-day fitness
• Trust capital and consumables policy — for vendor escalation governance

Bands and competency mapping

• Band 4 / 5 — independent analyser operation with full SOPs
• Band 6 — analyser specialist, train juniors, lead method-validation studies (see article 41), be a key user contact for vendor
• Band 7 — service-wide instrument governance, procurement decisions, contract management
